The Full Draw.

The small plastic balls of fate have been drawn out of the perspex buckets of destiny and we now know that England are concentrating on the 2016 European Cup in France.  Football aside the full draw for the World Cup Food Challenge is:

Group A) - Really Nice Food
Brazil
Croatia
Mexico
Cameroon

Group B) - Exploits of a Food Nut
Spain
Netherlands
Chile
Australia

Group C) - Soup Tuesday

Greece
Cote D'Ivoir
Japan

Group D) - Occasional Drivel
Uruguay
Costa Rica
England
Italy

Group E) - Tonight's Menu
Switzerland
Ecuador
France
Honduras

Group F) - The Food I Eat
Argentina
Bosnia Herzegovina
Iran
Nigeria

Group G) - Everything Goes With Toast
Germany
Portugal
Ghana
USA

Group H) - Food and Frets
Belgium
Algeria
Russia
South Korea

A recipe for each of the 32 teams will need to be cooked and blogged between the 12th and 26th June 2014.  Subsequent recipes for the teams that qualify from their groups will need to be cooked and blogged on the days when they are playing.  I quite fancy a Brazil v. Spain final, but will we see Feijoda verses Fabada?

The draw for the 2014 World Cup World Challenge

The excitement is building.  Not since the last time a large group of men in suits have sat around a room anxiously waiting for their name to be read out, have so many men in suits sat around a room anxiously waiting for their name to be read out.  The draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final takes place today!

But before all of the pomp and ceremony of the official draw, I have carried out a little low key version of events myself.  The names of eight food bloggers have been put into a velvet bag* and a local celebrity** has pulled them out in front of a live audience***.

The draw concluded as follows:

Group A - Rebecca - Really Nice Food
Group B - Gary - Exploits of a Food Nut
Group C - Dan - Soup Tuesday
Group D - Rob - Occasional Drivel
Group E - Ewan (me) - Tonight's Menu
Group F - Steph - The Food I Eat
Group G - Lianne - Everything Goes With Toast
Group H - Steve - Food and Frets

Now we can join the besuited managers, players, sponsors and celebrities in anticipation of the draw live from Costa do Sauipe. Who will get Brazil? Who will get Bosnia-Hercegovina? Does anybody actually want to end up cooking English food? All of these questions and more will be answered in the next couple of hours.

We're on our way to Brazil!

We* did it! Thanks to a captain's display from Stevie G England have finished top of Group E and have qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.  I know that for most sensible people the summer of 2014 is a million miles away, for the French and Portuguese there are still the play-offs, but for me we are now one step closer to the World Cup Food Challenge.

Back in 2012 a dedicated team of bloggers and I set about trying to eat the food of every nation taking part in the London Olympics.  We had 19 days in which to eat 204 countries worth of food.  It was a struggle, an enjoyable struggle, but a struggle never the less.  Some countries were difficult to find recipes for, some recipes needed ingredients that were impossible to find, some ingredients once found were plain nasty.

The original idea for the Olympic Food Challenge was born during the last World Cup in South Africa.  Every evening I would choose one of the countries which were playing and cook a meal in their honour.  This was before I had a blog so there is very little evidence of it happening, but it did happen.  In fact we still regularly cook one of the dishes we discovered, Kedjenou, from Cote D'Ivoire.

Now that the World Cup has come around again the challenge is back on, only this time there will be evidence.  There will also be more structure to make sure that food from every nation taking part is cooked and eaten.  There will also be a winner.

This is where you come in.  I know that there are only going to be 32 countries taking part in the World Cup and that it takes place over 32 days, but where would be the fun in just cooking a recipe per day?  What I am looking for is 7 other food bloggers who are willing, keen and able to cook and blog every time one of their countries is playing.

That's right, each of us will be allocated a group and FIFA will do the rest.  On the 6th December this year the World Cup draw takes place and that is when we will find out which countries we will be representing.  During the initial group stage we will all cook one recipe for each of our four countries, in any order and at any time, ensuring that every participating nation is cooked before they are eliminated.  Once we get into the knockout rounds you will need to cook, and blog, every day that your countries are playing.

Depending on the FIFA draw you could end up with the eventual winner and need to cook from that country 7 times.  If you are really lucky you could have both finalists in your group at the start of the tournament, although the chances of that are slim.  Over the course of the tournament we will need to cook and blog between 6 and 12 times each, I will also be keeping this blog up to date as we progress.

So, the question is, who is interested?  I already have a list of names of bloggers who are interested but it is by no means definitive.  Please let me know in the comments section, or on twitter if you would like to take part.  You don't even need to be interested in football.  I'll make sure the 7 bloggers know that they are involved before the 6th December so that we can all share in the delight as the teams are drawn out of a hat in the Costa do Sauipe in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

*Well England, as some one of mixed heritage (Scotland and Wales) I can't claim to have done anything.
